Case Studies: Social Media Use in Action

Social media and digital advancements in technology have become critical components of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery (Homeland Security Science and Technology, 2013). Whereas nonprofit organizations are increasingly experimenting with social media before deciding whether to implement it into their crisis communication plan, some have embraced the technology with full throttle. Three nonprofit organizations that recently experienced crisis situations are featured in this section as case studies to help demonstrate how social media were used during a crisis. These were selected based on the timeliness of the crisis events. Plus, each organization’s use of social media technology was a factor. Each case provides background information of the crisis event and explains the results or implications of their social media use.
